One complaint blossomed into an eight-book series.
“There are no books for us FASD kids,” complained my granddaughter minutes before I left home to speak on FASD at my local library. She had spotted my FASD memoirs packed in my presentation bag, and commented on the lack of children’s FASD picture books. On driving home from the presentation, I mulled over her comment and decided to create, initially for her eyes only, an FASD children’s picture book. As her elementary school offered support for children with FASD, I thought a story around her day in the special needs class would convince her that her life was as important as any neurotypical child’s. Hence, Strawberry & Cracker, Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome — THE SCHOOL DAY was born. From there it progressed to a picture book for all children with an FASD, to several children’s FASD picture books, to a full eight-book series illustrating challenges faced by children with an FASD.
Challenges associated with FASD
Each book addresses a challenge children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and their families face on a regular basis. Created to open an FASD discussion between caregiver and child, and teacher and students, the series also promotes FASD awareness within communities.

After twenty years of parenting four grandchildren with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Barbara Studham wrote two memoirs on her experience. The first FASD memoir titled Two Decades of Diapers describes her own early childhood, her daughter’s teen pregnancy, and the self-doubt and predicaments Barbara faced during her grandchildren’s toddler and early school years. The second FASD memoir titled Fetal Alcohol Syndrome; The Teen Years takes the reader on Barbara’s emotional journey through the critical times of her grandchildren’s FAS teenage years. Barbara Studham has also written fiction, including a six-book amateur sleuth series titled, Under The Shanklin Sky; set in the seaside town of Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. Barbara now spends her time creating the children’s FASD picture book series, Strawberry & Cracker, Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
