The Birthday Bash

The Twins Learn Of Their Disorder

THE BIRTHDAY BASH

Strawberry and Cracker are twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. They live with their grandma and her dog, Thunder.  In The Birthday Bash, the twins receive a party invitation from their big brother Rocky who lives with his foster parents. But, Grandma is nervous. The noise and liveliness associated with parties can overwhelm a child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and result in misbehavior or meltdowns. Rocky’s Foster dad, Sergio, suggests strategies for a successful celebration, but when the festivities begin, the stimulation escalates the twins’ behavior to the point of ruining Rocky’s party. With Strawberry’s attempt to start a food fight, the twins’ destruction of the decorations, and their howls at the noise of musical chairs, Grandma decides it is time to leave!

THE BIRTHDAY BASH is suitable for children ages 5-12. Available from AMAZON.

The Twins Learn of their Disorder. New March 2019 release in the Strawberry and Cracker, Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, series. http://www.challengedhope.com

Talking to a child with a fetal alcohol-related diagnosis about their disorder is difficult. I raised grandchildren with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. As each one was diagnosed, discussing the disorder and its associated problems never got easier. My reason for holding back was partly due to the stigma attached to the diagnosis, and partly due to my reluctance to label each child. Conversely, having the diagnosis led to supports and services vital to their well-being.

The Twins Learn Of Their Disorder is designed to help open a discussion around the diagnosis. When I discussed FASD with my grandchildren, they were unable to absorb its seriousness, would become afraid, and voice weird imaginings, and giggle to hide their fear. To bring a whimsical touch to talking about FASD, I incorporated those reactions into the story so your child won’t feel alone in their fears.

To avoid overwhelming your child, in the book, I have covered the basics of FASD only. Future discussions are yours, but it’s my hope this book will make initial dialogue easier.

Children’s FASD Picture Book Series, and FASD Memoirs, by Barbara Studham

Strawberry & Cracker, Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Children’s FASD Picture Book Series

Children’s FASD Picture Book Series.

Strawberry & Cracker are twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome who live with their grandma. The series is designed to fulfill several needs.

  • to offer children with FASD a fun picture book featuring characters and daily challenges to which they can relate.
  • to help children with FASD accept their diagnosis.
  • to help children with FASD read more often.
  • to offer caregivers a tool with which to introduce their child with FASD to the disorder.
  • to bring public awareness to FASD.

The Strawberry & Cracker, Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome series is primarily designed for children ages 5-12 years of age and with FASD. However, the first three in the series are also finding there way into non-FASD homes to help children understand the difficulties associated with the disorder. Several classrooms have included the books on their shelves. Future goals include placing the books in libraries and retail stores.

ADVOCATE! FASD picture book. Strawberry and Cracker, Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. http://www.challengedhope.com

I created ADVOCATE! a children’s FASD picture book for children aged 5-12 in support of September’s FASD Awareness Day, but with kids now firmly settled back in school, ADVOCATE! makes a great FASD teaching tool not only for children but also teachers. Educators don’t automatically know the signs and symptoms of FASD; like all of us, they need to be taught.

ADVOCATE! FASD picture book for children aged 5-12.

Meet Strawberry & Cracker, Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome who live with their Grandma. On International FASD Awareness Day, Grandma encourages the twins to advocate by sharing their FASD feelings. With her help, the twins write to everyday people in their community, those unfamiliar with the signs and symptoms of FASD. In doing so, Strawberry and Cracker convey the challenges of FASD and garner support for all children with FASD. Happy to be advocates for their cause, the twins share their feelings with a list of locals including a sour server at a local café, a lifeguard who needs a lesson in compassion, an unpleasant uncle, a shocked shopper, and a troubled teacher. Grandma cannot help shedding a tear of pride when the twins agree to advocate and share their feelings.

Peek inside ADVOCATE!

Here, are just two incidences associated with FASD within the pages of ADVOCATE!. The story includes information relating to FASD. I believe the Strawberry and Cracker, Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome series belongs in every school and library!

The Strawberry and Cracker, Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome series including THE SCHOOL DAY, FIDGET! and ADVOCATE! is available from AMAZON. An FASD picture book series suitable for children aged 5-12.

Just in time for FASD Awareness Day, ADVOCATE! is great for door prizes or giveaways at #FASDevents. Also, a great gift for those wanting to understand children’s FASD feelings, and for family and friends who need to acknowledge the life experiences of children with FASD. Your local community including schools and libraries will gain a better perspective of FASD from the letters that Strawberry & Cracker write to people who simply do not understand the disorder and will, perhaps, see themselves as equally ignorant of the subject.

Also available in the Strawberry and Cracker, Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, is THE SCHOOL DAY, and, FIDGET! Seen here at this link:
